Welcome back followers of the fearsome!

This week we are implementing new and exciting bad guys for Viking Squad! Flying foes have presented some interesting challenges and we are working to implement a super fun burrowing treasure boss! We are looking to get a lot more fun things to fight in Viking Squad during the next little while as well as getting our game loop up to snuff.

Above you can see our super crafty (and slightly advanced) Cave Mole and our often sleeping, Bat enemy! The Cave Mole will burrow around the screen and unleash stalactite drops with his huge crushing gloves and knock players away when he erupts from the ground! Bats will be annoying monsters that are quicker and harder to hit than your regular Snowclaw keeping the tradition of bats in video games alive!

A lot of the ideas here were created during our weekly livestreams, it’s been a bunch of fun creating with a crew of watchers and contributors and we hope to keep the tradition going throughout the development of Viking Squad!

And as always be sure to drop by today at 4pm PST -6pm for our weekly Dev-Stream! Ask questions! Learn about our process! Talk to the team! It all happens every Wednesday right here!

Dev-Blog 142: Playstation Experience in Las Vegas!

12/10/2014

Welcome back, followers of the fearsome!

This week there isn’t too much to say about the actual development of the game, as we were super busy getting everything ready for the Playstation Experience in Las Vegas. We left for Vegas on December 4th, setup our stand on the Friday, and showed the game to the public on Saturday and Sunday. The show was super fun, and really well organized. We received lots of valuable feedback from players, and we met a lot of fellow indie developers. Here are some impressions from this weekend:

Alright, that’s it for this week. We have lots of feedback to integrate into our game, so we are getting back to the grind. Till next week!

Oh, and of course, tune in to our weekly Twitch cast from 4-6pm today!

Dev-Blog 141: Visual Designing and the Three Bears!

12/03/2014

Welcome back followers of the fearsome!

This week we prep for the Playstation Experience as we are flying away tomorrow! Wish us luck as we land our dragon ship in Vegas and get a bunch of people to check out Viking Squad! We’ll be sure  to bring back details about our trip and let you guys know how it goes!

This week’s dev-blog we’d like to share some recent visual design stuff! Our lovable Snowclaws can get really tough during our Viking’s voyage and some bring a modified behavior and difficulty curve. To show that these guys basically act the same but are more difficult to handle we need to add some visual design!

VS_silhouette63

Here’s what we came up with! Above you can see that we increased the size and added a bunch of visuals to those tougher Snowclaws! They have the same weapons so players can assume that they’ll be dealing with the same basic attacks with a few more surprises!

———-

It didn’t always look like this though, initially to get a stronger enemy into the game we simply increased the size and tinted the snow claw pink as you can see below.

VS_silhouette64

the pink tinted Snowclaws were a great temporary look to these harder enemies but we needed some more changes done to differentiate them. I then did up the “Fish Slammer” on the right that wields dual fishes instead of knives. The Fish Slammer simply looked “Too Different” from the original Snowclaw and Caley made a great point in saying that the expectations of that enemy would be too different and players wouldn’t know what to expect.

We compromised with the warpaint (A bit of throwback to the initial tinting) and the armor (obviously makes the enemy appear tougher). And It worked out! Using our universal badguy puppets it was super easy to change out all these elements and maybe the Fish Slammer will come back in a different enemy form!

———-

And as always remember to come on down to our twitch channel today at 4-6pm PST for some sweet dev-stream action! This week we’ll be doing some super fun Character Design stuff for a Mini Boss enemy! Streaming has become a really fun weekly event for us here at Slick and we look forward to seeing all those familiar faces and answer your questions!

So another week slams by here at Slick! Wish us luck in Vegas and until next time, don’t overdo those visual choices!
