Dev-Blog 236: Gone Paxin’ and some Artwork!

08/31/2016

Welcome back followers of the fearsome!

This week we have a quick dev-Blog with some of the artwork we’ve been working on for marketing images. I always make the joke that “By the time this game is out I’ll finally be good at drawing all the guys!” and It’s pretty much there! I got to have a lot of fun drawing our characters in super cool poses and embellishing details while we get the game ready to ship!

We can also use these images in a multitude of other things like posters, banners, and anything really as long as we keep them all separate and can align them in a pleasing image! We are also pretty lucky that we draw all our images so large so we can shrink them down to fit pretty much any format without too much quality loss.

Also, this week we are hitting PAX West! We’ll be at the very awesome Indie MEGABOOTH! We always have an awesome time showing off the game and meeting new faces! We got our build ready to rock so if you are down in the Seattle area and are hitting up the Penny Arcade Expo be sure to drop by and hang out with the whole crew!

So that does mean that we won’t be able to do up our Viking Vednesday dev-stream but be sure to come by next week when we’ll have news and fun things to share about PAX!

VS_silhouette94

And that’s it for this week! Thanks so much for stopping by and checking out our stuff! Online is feeling super tight and the game keeps getting more and more close to those docks! Until next time, keep on going to PAX and play great games by great Devs!

Dev-Blog 235: Bow flairs and Twitch Con Giveaway!

08/24/2016

devblog_header08

Welcome back followers of the fearsome!

This week we’ll be going over some quick art updates that we’ve managed to get into the game in the last stretch that really added a lot of value to our favorite bow blasting battler!

VS_silhouette191

There’s quite a bit of weaponry that you can unlock in Viking Squad and everyone gets their own variation on a weapons theme. The Bow guy has always been a little lack luster in the weapons department because the only thing that got updated was his dagger which isn’t really his primary “Hero” weapon. That always bugged us a little and as the game gets ready to ship there isn’t a lot of areas where we can cram in more art which is simultaneously frustrating and relieving in equal parts.

Luckily we found a pretty easy solution to the problem! Adding some upgrades to the tips of the bow that matches the equipped weapon really brings out a lot of visual interest. It also didn’t take too long to have every weapon in the game have it’s very own flair. A very cool and easy way to give Bow- Viking players a bit of a surprise whenever they unlock new gear!

We also want to announce that we’ll be showing the Squad at this year’s super awesome Twitch Con in San Diego!  We are super stoked to be showing our game at a very cool convention. Last year Kevin Regamey of Power up Audio and I (Jesse) went to Twitch Con to connect with people and get into the Twitch scene. It was a great experience and now we’ll be all going down to represent Viking Squad on the convention floor!

VS_silhouette190

Also we’ll be giving away some tickets while we ramp up to go so be sure to follow us on facebook and check out our twitter for a chance to win ’em!

And speaking of that super cool streaming service; we’ll be jumping on the Dev-Stream today at 4pm-6pm PST! Be sure to drop by for a whole pile of fun and art slams with the Drawbarian!

So that’s it for this week! Thanks a pile for checking out what’s been going on here at Slick! Nick and Caley are hunting down bugs and passing our game through those rigorous Technical Requirements Checklists to make sure Squad can hit the masses! Hope you liked this weeks gander at the game and until next time, keep those bows looking super cool!

Dev-Blog 234: Indie MEGABOOTH at Pax West!

08/17/2016

devblog_header08

Welcome back followers of the fearsome!

This week we gotta let you guys know that we’ll be attending Pax West at the super awesome Indie MEGABOOTH! We’ve been with the crew of the IMB before and they are a really great resource for independent developers. They handle pretty much all the logistics of showing your game at a convention with the added bonus of being among a pile of other awesome indie games! PAX is also a really great convention. Traditionally the biggest area is given to the Indie MEGABOOTH so that the smaller guys get a chance to take up the floor along side the big guns like Sony and Nintendo!

VS_silhouette188

Conventions are always a really fun experience for us. It’s so great to see players engaging with your game and getting smashed by our bosses, or getting in that clutch save when their friends are knocked out. This will also be a great show because the very awesome Power Up Audio will be there representing the many, many games that they are working on.

So if you are attending Pax West be sure to drop by and bash some baddies with your buddies! The whole team will be there happy to answer questions and say hey! Hope to see you guys at PAX!

VS_silhouette189

And don’t forget that we’ll be doing our Dev-Stream today at 4pm-6pm PST! Be sure to drop in because we’ll be doing some very cool giveaways today that we are sure you’ll be interested in!

VS_silhouette115

And that’s it for this week! Closer and closer the Viking Squad ship sails to completion. Thanks for stopping by and checking out our dev-blog! And come see us at PAX  West and play some Squad!

Dev-Blog 232: Getting into Merch!

08/10/2016

devblog_header08

Welcome back followers of the fearsome!

This week we’ll be checking out some cool merchandise we’ve been starting to design! We decided to use Spreadshirt as our avenue for T-shirts because they handle pretty much everything as far as printing and shipping. We were influenced by the super cool Fantastic Contraption T-shirts and they’ve been super helpful in giving us some advice on the whole thing so thanks Northway Games!

Designing t-shirts has always been pretty tricky, I’ve never really been happy enough with a design I’ve made to put it on a shirt. Luckily with the help of our dev-streams and some discussion we’ve come up with a few super neat designs!

VS_silhouette186

Above you can see the store layout and a couple examples of what designs we made! We didn’t want to make them all just branded with Viking Squad, we were more interested in having a fun design that you could represent however you like! So we came up with a coat of arms, our sturdy walrus, a delicious healing ham and our stream’s very own Canada Crab!

Creating Marketing images has always been a bit of a struggle for me. Sometimes the images you work on the longest turn out the worst while a few simple lines really resonates with people. It really just comes down to practice, keep on creating and eventually something will land and feel right.

VS_silhouette187

So if you’d like to rep Viking Squad with a Slick T-shirt hit up our store on Spreadshirt right here! The store is pretty easy to change so we’ll be updating it as we go!

And don’t forget that we’ll be Dev-Streaming today at 4pm-6pm PST! We’ve been getting closer and closer to shipping every day and  have had a lot of great times hanging out with our crew and meeting new people!

VS_DevstreamBanner

So another week sails by here at Slick! There’s been bug fixing and testing happening like crazy as well as getting together trailers and a whole pile of stuff! Thanks for stopping by the Dev-Blog and until next time, keep those T-shirts readable at a distance!

Dev-Blog 231: World Map Wrap Up!

08/03/2016

devblog_header08

Welcome back followers of the fearsome!

This week it’s a quick look at our world map getting it’s final touches!

The world map has always been a dynamic asset in Viking Squad, initially it was a simple top down map that even showed your treasure, then it didn’t even exist! It’s always good to be able to change assets during the course of development and the world map is no exception.

VS_silhouette184

As you can see above we swapped out the old Valknut symbols and replaced them with a more appealing gold coin and bright arrow. This made it feel a lot more related to the perspective of the world map and also helped prevent some confusion about our checkpoint system and gave us a bit more flexibility. The new selection graphics are also a lot easier to see and look pretty cool!

VS_silhouette185

What’s super cool is now the world map is edited in the puppet editor so we can add cool stuff like animated sprites, offset clouds, bones, and even some chromatic aberration and film grain. This keeps the screen feeling like the rest of the game and fits in a lot easier to our pipeline.

It’s gone through a bunch of changes but now that we are getting close to shipping the world map finally feels right! We also learned a lot throughout working on it so many different times.

Also don’t forget to tune into our weekly dev-stream today at 4pm – 6pm PST! We’ve been working on some super cool T-Shirt designs and interacting with a great amount of regulars and new faces! Don’t miss it!

VS_DevstreamBanner

So that’s it for this week here at Slick! Thanks for stopping by to check up on our progress as we sail ever closer to our ship! Until next time, keep iterating on those world maps!

I almost can’t believe it: Slick Entertainment is a decade old!
